Our data & how this site works

The facility directory is built on the 2025 National Directories published by SAMHSA — the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's National Directories of treatment facilities. This is a primary federal source, not data scraped from other directories.

Individual psychiatrist listings come from the federal National Provider Identifier (NPI) registry, limited to physicians with psychiatry as their registered specialty.

A small number of listings were added or corrected by hand where we researched a facility directly, and facilities can claim and update their own listings.

We also publish our own analysis of this dataset: The State of Treatment Access in America looks at which states and cities lack residential care and how Medicaid acceptance varies across the country.

Treatment Finder is a treatment directory that includes different types of provider and facility listings — treatment facilities, psychiatrists, and other behavioral-health professionals — and the source of the information depends on the type of listing. We use a combination of authoritative public data sources, provider-submitted information, and our own editorial review. The source and verification status of information can vary by listing and by data field.

Treatment facilities

Treatment facility listings are primarily sourced from SAMHSA's National Directories of treatment facilities. We process, review, and validate these records before publication — the steps are described under How listings go live.

Psychiatrists and physicians

Psychiatrist listings are sourced from the federal National Provider Identifier (NPI) Registry and are limited to physicians whose registered specialty information identifies psychiatry or an applicable psychiatry-related specialty supported by the source data. An NPI record documents a provider's federal registration — it is not by itself a clinical endorsement or an independent verification of the provider, and it does not on its own establish that a provider is currently practicing.

Other behavioral-health professionals

The directory may also include therapists, psychologists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, social workers, counselors, marriage and family therapists, and other behavioral-health professionals. For these provider types, we use the applicable authoritative public source for that profession and jurisdiction — such as a state professional licensing database or another authoritative government or provider source — when one is available. Because those sources vary by profession and by state, the specific source depends on each listing's provider type and location.

Provider-submitted information

Providers can claim and update their own listings. Where appropriate, provider-submitted information is distinguished from information obtained from public government datasets.

Treatment Finder verification

We may independently review information before publishing it or before accepting provider-submitted changes. Throughout the directory, we distinguish between information obtained from public government datasets, information submitted directly by providers, and information independently reviewed or verified by Treatment Finder.

A listing's data source does not by itself mean that Treatment Finder endorses the provider or guarantees the accuracy of every clinical, insurance, or service-related detail. Where applicable, verification badges describe the specific information or affiliation we have reviewed — see What “Verified provider” means below.

One record per physical facility. Every state's data is reviewed by a person before any of it is published: duplicate records are merged, and listings with unverifiable addresses, addresses that contradict the facility's own website, or phone numbers from the wrong region are held back rather than published.

We'd rather show you fewer facilities than send you to a wrong address or a wrong number. When a phone number looks wrong, we check it against the facility's own website and correct it — and if we can't confirm it, we remove it instead of guessing.

Facilities that submit or claim a listing go through an additional review before any change appears publicly.

A Verified provider badge means the facility's own team claimed the listing, proved their affiliation with documentation we reviewed, and maintains the profile themselves. It verifies who controls the listing — it is not an endorsement of the facility or a guarantee of clinical quality.

Insurance details are facility-reported and are labeled that way throughout the site — including on verified profiles. Coverage changes often, so always call the facility to confirm your specific plan before making a decision.

Facilities can pay for enhanced profiles: a verified badge, photos, expanded program details, and analytics dashboards. That's what they get — better tools and a richer page.

No facility can pay its way into your matches. Results are filtered purely on fit — your coverage, the level of care you need, and your location — and money never touches those filters. A facility that can't bill your insurance or doesn't offer the care you need is excluded no matter what it pays.

A small number of featured partners receive a modest boost in ordering. When that happens, it is disclosed directly on the result card (“Featured partner facility”), it can only reorder facilities that already qualified for you, and it can never rescue one that didn't.

We do not run ads, and placement in results is never for sale.

Your questionnaire answers never leave your device. They are stored in your own browser — not on our servers — so we keep no record of who you are, what you're struggling with, or what you searched for.

Facilities cannot see who viewed their listing. Our analytics are anonymous daily counts — a facility can see that its page was viewed, never by whom.

You contact facilities directly, by phone or through their own website — we never ask for your name or contact information to show you results. The only personal information we ever receive is what you choose to send through our contact page, and we use it solely to reply to you. We never sell or share it. Directories are living documents and facility details change. If you spot an error — a wrong number, a closed facility, an outdated payer list — contact us and we'll correct or remove it promptly. Facilities can also claim their listing to keep it current themselves.
